
Celebrating Pride Month
Pride is the celebration of all LGBTQ+ people, young and old, and Childline is a space where all young people can share who they are.
What is Pride Month?
June is Pride Month. It’s a celebration of all LGBTQ+ people and a chance to raise awareness of the rights of LGBTQ+ people across the world.
Pride is an opportunity to show your support or campaign for LGBTQ+ people. There are loads of ways to get involved:
- Follow our tips and think about taking part in a Pride event near you
- Learn more about the history of Pride and the Stonewall Riots that led to it
- Find out more about any local charities for LGBTQ+ people and how you can support them
- Display a Pride flag or wear a Pride pin
We know not everyone feels able to celebrate Pride. Remember that whatever’s happening in your life, Childline’s here to support you.
Our Pride Month tips
There are events and marches all over the world for Pride. It can be a great opportunity to show your support and solidarity for Pride. For lots of people, it’s also a chance to be yourself and feel connected to other people.
If you’re thinking about going to a Pride event, try our top tips to get the best out of it.
Tips for attending a Pride event
- Make sure you know when and where the event is happening, and check when it’s likely to be busiest.
- Go with other people if you can, it could be an adult you trust or a supportive friend.
- Make sure you know where you’re meeting people, especially when it’s going to be busy.
- Let someone you trust know where you’re going and when you plan to be back.
- Keep hydrated and take a water bottle with you, especially when it’s hot.
- Plan how you’re getting home, including making sure you’ve got enough money for things like public transport.
Not feeling able to celebrate
There are lots of reasons you might not feel able to take part in Pride. You might be worried about coming out, or how others might react. You could be concerned about your safety or being bullied.
Childline is a safe space where you can talk about anything that’s happening or how you’re feeling. Remember, you can always:
- Share how you’re feeling with a Childline counsellor
- Use the toolbox to express yourself.
Can’t attend Pride but still want to celebrate? Try:
- Sharing your experiences or celebrating Pride online
- Finding local exhibitions or events that celebrate LGBTQ+ history
- Looking for or starting up a virtual club of your own
- Celebrating with friends, such as hosting a movie night to watch films from LGBTQ+ creators.
