Financial exploitation

This is when someone encourages or forces you to do a financial activity that benefits somebody else and not you. This could include them using your bank account for money laundering. This is abuse and whatever’s happened it’s never too late to get help.

How financial exploitation happens

Money laundering is when criminals try to hide where money they have made illegally has come from. One way they do this is by transferring money through other people’s bank accounts.

This could be the bank account that you use yourself or they could get you to open a new bank account for them to use that’s under your name. There are different ways this can happen.

How to stay safe

Protecting Your Bank Account

  • Don’t share your PIN number or passwords with anyone.
  • Don’t share your bank account details with anyone unless you trust them and there is a good reason to do this.
  • Don’t agree to anybody moving money through your account, there is no reason for them to have to do this.
  • Don’t open a bank account for somebody else to use.

Protecting Your Personal Details

  • Don’t give your personal details to anybody, even people you know, if there isn’t a valid reason for them to have it.
  • Use good anti-virus software for your computer and devices and scan them regularly.

Grooming

  • There are some people who will befriend someone or form a romantic relationship with them to gain their trust to then exploit them, this is called grooming. If this has happened it’s not your fault and there’s help available.
  • If you’re unsure about something speak to a trusted adult or Childline, it’s never too late to get help.

What to do if your bank account has been frozen?

Banks will freeze bank accounts if they discover that they have been used for money laundering. You could then find yourself not being able to open another bank account. It’s important to remember that you haven’t done anything wrong and that financial exploitation is child abuse.

How your bank responds to you can depend on how you report what’s happened. If you tell them that your bank account has been frozen for fraudulent activity they may decide not to help you. However, if you tell them that you have been the victim of financial exploitation then they should help you. You can show them this webpage if the particular staff member isn’t familiar with financial exploitation.

Remember that you don’t have to go through this alone, you can always get support from a trusted adult or from a Childline counsellor.
