7 tips to cope this Christmas
Chances are that Christmas won’t feel the same this year because of Coronavirus. Whether you’re excited, scared or worried about the festive holidays, we’ve got advice to get you through it.
Not everyone enjoys Christmas, but even when you do there might be things that make it difficult.
Whatever’s happening around the holidays, there are ways to cope:
1. Make time for yourself
Plan time when you can be by yourself or when you can take a break. And make sure you give other people space as well.
Remember, even when you can’t go out as much it can help to go for a walk.
2. Keep in touch with people
Staying in touch with videocalls, phone calls and messages can help you to feel connected even when you’re apart, but remember to pay attention to the people you’re with.
3. Get help if you’re struggling with eating
If you struggle with eating, then Christmas can be a difficult time, but we’re here to help. Talk to a Childline counsellor about anything that’s worrying you.
4. Remember social distancing
You might not have much choice about who you can and can’t spend Christmas with, but try to follow the rules around social distancing. This includes washing your hands and limiting the number of people you see.
5. Find things in common
It can be lonely when you don’t fit in at home. But there can be ways to connect to the people you live with.
Think about small things you might have in common, like games or TV shows and start a conversation.
6. Make a list of things you’re grateful for
Whether it’s big or small, writing down 3 things every day that you’re grateful for can help to improve your mood. You could include things at home, people you know or even just the weather.
7. Make a safety plan
A safety plan tells you what to do if you’re struggling with your feelings or you feel unsafe at home. And we’ve got lots of advice on what to include and ways to get support.
Whatever your Christmas is like you don’t have to cope alone, we’re here throughout Christmas and you can talk to us about anything.
