Is it possible to be a Lesbian and Omnisexual at the same time? | Ask Sam
Hi Sam,
I am a 13 year old using She/Her pronouns and am a Lesbian and Omnisexual, but I am not sure if I can be a Lesbian and Omnisexual person at the same time because Lesbians are girls who are emotionally and physically attracted to someone of the same gender and omnisexuals are people who are sexually or romantically attracted of any gender and I do not feel comfortable talking to my family about it and prefer to keep it private because they are homophobic and transphobic and are religious. What do I do?

Hi there,
Your sexuality is all about who you’re attracted to. How you identify is something that’s personal to you, and only you can decide if different labels or descriptions fit how you feel.
There are lots of different sexualities and ways of describing your sexuality. Our page on LGBTQ+ terms includes a few of them, including lesbian and omnisexual, but sometimes people will use the same term to describe slightly different feelings.
While some people would see being lesbian and omnisexual as two separate sexualities, there are others who would identify as both for lots of different reasons. When you’re thinking about whether you could be both, it can help to think through the reasons you identify with each. It can help to remember that labels of your sexuality are only helpful if you find them helpful, it’s okay if you’re not ready to define yourself.
It should always be your choice whether you’re ready to come out to your family or anyone else. When it doesn’t feel safe speaking to your family, it can help to think about other people and places you feel safe to talk about your feelings. Our message boards have lots of young people supporting each other about their sexuality, including thinking about how they identify. It’s a safe space and any young person can post there any time.
