What would you say to a muslim teen whose struggling with their sexuality and see no way out?
Hi there,
Sexuality is about who you are attracted to and what that means for you. It can mean different things for different people and how you identify can stay the same, change or evolve, there is no right or wrong.
Understanding your sexuality can take time to explore. You are you and your sexuality is an important part of you, just as your religion can be. It can feel difficult if your own religious beliefs don’t align with your sexuality or if you’re worried about the future. No matter how you’re feeling, you’re not alone.
Islam, like many religions can have different interpretations about sexuality. Some young people worry about how their family or community will react if they come out, but many young people are able to feel accepted whilst continuing their faith.
If you’re worried about how your family or other people might react, then it’s important to get help. It can be good to think about who you’d feel comfortable or safe talking to. Remember, it should always be your choice about who you share your sexuality with. It’s important to think about whether you feel safe or ready to come out.
There are lots of people in your life who you may feel comfortable talking to. Even if you don’t, you can speak to Childline, we’re a safe and confidential space. The Muslim Youth Helpline also offers faith and culturally sensitive and confidential support and can help you speak about your sexuality.
You can also come and chat with other young people safely about sexuality and what that means for them within their religion on our Childline message boards. The boards can be a great place to share experiences and see that you’re not alone.
Take care,
Sam
