I need advice | Ask Sam

What should I do if my mum is hinting at getting back with her abusive ex? They had been together for about 8 years and for around 6 of those they constantly argued and he abused her. Now, my mum has been going to see him for hours each night and iI’m worried they might get back together, which means more yelling and abuse in the house. I’m just scared and concerned and I don’t know what to do

Hi there,

You always have the right to be safe at home. Even when you’re worried about something happening in the future, it’s important to get support.

Lots of people in abusive relationships can struggle to leave, and this can include going back after they’ve broken up. Both you and your mum deserve support with what’s happened.

It’s important to remember that it’s not your responsibility to stop what’s happening. Telling your mum about your worries can be helpful, and it can help your mum to understand your fears. Your mum could even contact the Domestic Abuse Helpline.

It can help to think about the adults in your life who you can get support from. This could be family outside the home, someone at school, or someone who helped when the abuse was happening. Sharing what’s going on can mean you’re not alone in supporting your mum and planning for the future. This is also the best way to make sure you’re feeling safe.

Whatever happens, when you’re worried about your safety then a safety plan can help. This includes who you can contact, where you can go, and what to do if something does go wrong. We’ve got advice on how to make one, and it’s helpful to write it with someone you trust.

No matter what happens next, Childline is here for you. You can speak to a Childline counsellor any time online or on the phone. They can help you to think about what’s happening and decide what to do next.

Take care,

Sam
