Ways to celebrate Black History Month

Want to get involved with Black History Month? Check out these ideas.

Get creative

Pride portrait

Create a self-portrait surrounded by words or pictures of things that make you proud of yourself. Make it on paper, craft, or online.

If you’re signed in, you can create an image on the Art box and share it in our gallery.

Power poster

Look for a quote from a Black leader or celebrity that inspires you and create a poster for it. Try to use images or colours that help you to feel positive.

Confidence collage

Make a collage with photos, images, and quotes that represent your own identity, values or hopes for the future.

Timeline of power

Create a timeline of Black British figures who inspire you, include a sentence or paragraph about each person’s contributions.

Experience something new

Film night

Host a remote or in-person film night to watch films or shows by Black creators. Share what you think about them afterwards.

Pride playlist

Create a playlist of songs by Black artists that makes you feel powerful or proud.

Not feeling music? Try a new podcast from a Black creator.

Share your playlist with your friends or someone close to you.

Read a new author

Read a book by a Black author you haven’t read before, try a new graphic novel, or listen to an audio book.

After you start, why not share what you think with a friend or on the message boards.

Get cooking

Try making a new African or Caribbean recipe, there are lots of ideas online to get you started.

You could try making something yourself or with people at home.

Think about the future

Letter to the future

Write a letter for you to open in 5 years. Try including things that make you proud of yourself now, memories of what’s happening in your life, and what kind of person you hope to become.

You could also write about the things you’d like to campaign for or try and change around you.

Create a power piece

Create a video or post with the theme, “What does it mean to stand firm in power and pride today?”

If it feels safe to, share what you’ve created with people you care about.

Written something and want to share it with Childline? Try posting it on the message boards.

Time capsule

Create a time capsule for a hundred years in the future. Think about what news, events, or people you’d most want to include.

Your time capsule could be physical, or you could create a digital time capsule and save it to open in the future.

More ways to get involved

There are lots of ways you can get involved with Black History Month:

  • find out what your school or local library is doing to celebrate, and talk to your teachers about how you can get involved
  • take some time to learn about Black people you admire that have helped shape you, the UK, or the world
  • share what you think on the message boards or answer our question of the week
  • talk about the difficulties you’ve had as a Black person or what you’d like to change in the future.
