Overeating/binge eating | Ask Sam

hi sam

So recently i've noticed that i've started eating a lot more than before, mostly junk/unhealthy food and i've gained weight. i've been struggling with loneliness and stress at school and i asked my mum and she said i was probably eating away my stress, but its been worrying me so i asked it.

THANKS

Hi there,

Lots of people eat “comfort food” when they’re feeling stressed or lonely. It can feel like a way to cope, but it can also leave you feeling worse afterwards. If you’re feeling low or worried about your eating, there are things you can do.

Having a healthy diet can help improve your mood and make things easier to cope with, but that’s not always easy. It can help to think about the times you’re eating junk food, and plan for alternatives with your mum. Looking together at healthier things you could eat can give you more motivation and help you feel less alone in what you’re eating.

Having a healthier diet can help, but it can feel difficult when you haven’t got other ways to manage your stress. We’ve got lots of ideas for ways to deal with stress, it can help to look at what feels right for you and plan to try them when things feel too much. Sometimes coping can be as simple as using a fidget toy to keep your hands busy.

A lot of young people talk to Childline about feeling lonely, you’re not the only one going through that. When loneliness is starting to affect you, it can help to get support. You can talk to a Childline counsellor any time. Getting help with your loneliness can help things to change in the future.

If you’re worried that your eating may be out of control or that it’s having a big impact on your life, it’s important to get support. Visiting your GP to talk about what’s happening can be a good first step to understanding more about what’s happening and what you can do to help.

Take care,

Sam
