Hi there,

Everyone needs time to learn at their own pace, whether that’s with algebra or any other topic. Whether other people are faster or slower, it’s never okay for people to be rude to you about it.

When someone is being rude to you, that says more about them than it does about you. Trying to make someone feel bad about their abilities can be a form of bullying, and it’s not okay. It can help to talk to the teacher about what they’re doing, so you don’t have to manage it alone.

If you’re worried about whether you’re finding the algebra too hard, it can help to speak to your teacher about that as well. When it feels like others are faster than you, it can make you question yourself. Your teacher can help you see that it’s natural to need time with work sometimes, or give you support if there’s anything in particular you need help with.

The message boards are filled with young people who have gone through similar things, and can be a great place to get ideas for ways to respond to these bullies. It can also help to think about different ways to build your own confidence outside of your maths lessons.

Remember, whether you need more time with algebra or not doesn’t change who you are as a person.

Take care,

Sam
