My carers are making me get grief counselling | Ask Sam

Hey Sam,

my dad passed way about 9 months ago and I feel like my carers are now having conversations about me getting grief counselling. If I do it I am worried that I will loss all of my memories and what I know about him.

Hi there,

Your dad passing away is a massive thing to cope with, it’s natural that you’d want to keep your memories and feelings about him. Learning to cope doesn’t mean you have to forget someone and what they meant to you.

Grief counselling is all about giving you time and space to talk about your dad, what’s happened, and how you’re feeling. It’s a chance for you to try to understand what’s happened and what it’s like now. Grief counsellors aren’t there to make you forget about your dad, they can actually help you think about new ways to remember him.

It’s good to be part of conversations about your support. This could mean talking to your carers about your worries and sharing what you’d like to happen. Asking questions about what might happen and sharing when you’re worried can help make sure people explain what’s happening.

Remember, if you ever need a space to talk then you can always get support from Childline. Our counsellors are here to listen to you, we’ve also got lots of advice for coping with grief.

Take care,

Sam
