Hi there,

Although it's rare, it's possible to catch certain sexually transmitted infections in ways that don't involve having sex. You should be able to get a test no matter what your situation is and you can do this for free at a sexual health clinic.

Some sexual health clinics are specifically for young people up to age 25. Whichever one you use, they should give you confidential advice and support no matter what your gender or sexuality. This includes people under the age of 16 as well.

Some infections that can be transmitted sexually can also be caught in other ways. A type of Herpes (HSV-1) can be transmitted through kissing - this is what causes cold sores. It's a very common infection and a lot of people have it without even realising it. Other types of STI like Gonorrhoea, Chlamydia and Syphilis can be passed on through oral sex, so you don't need to have had intercourse to get them.

HIV is passed on in other ways that aren't sex as well - usually when coming in contact with blood from an infected person. This might happen from sharing razors, toothbrushes or needles. You can't get HIV from touching or kissing someone. Before getting a test you might be asked some questions, because if you've not done anything that can pass on the virus you may not need one.

To find the nearest place where you can get tested you can use the NHS service finder to see what's in your area. Many of them run on a no-appointment basis so you can just drop in, though sometimes you may need to wait a little while to be seen. You should double check how your local clinic works.

If you want to speak more about any worries you have, you can speak confidentially to a Childline counsellor or talk to other young people on the Childline message boards.

If you want actual medical advice you'll need to speak to your GP and they can give you direct advice about your specific situation. You can see your GP confidentially no matter what age you are.

I hope this helps. Thanks for sharing, take care.
