Why am I the target | Ask Sam

Dear Sam. I have just finished my first year of secondary school, but for some reason, everyone just picks on ME and I dont understand why I am the target? How can I be more self resilient towards bullies?

Hi there,

It can feel upsetting and isolating when you’re being picked on. Being bullied is never your fault, and you don’t deserve what’s happening.

There are lots of reasons people can choose to bully or be unkind. Sometimes people might feel angry, out of control, or they might feel like they need to do it to fit in. Whatever might be happening, there are no good reasons for someone to target you or anyone else. You can’t control what other people choose to do, but you can choose how you’ll react.

The most important thing with bullying is to get support. This could be from someone in school like a teacher, or an adult you trust and feel safe with. You can’t always stop bullying alone, and getting help from an adult can change things for you. It can take time for bullying to stop, but there are ways to take control and build your resilience.

When someone starts picking on you, think about how you’d like to react. Sometimes people pick on others to get a reaction. Acting like you don’t care or just walking away can stop them getting what they want.

It can also help to keep a diary of what’s happening. It can give you a space to let out how you’re feeling, but it can also be a way to show others how much people are bullying you.

Remember, what’s happening isn’t because of something you’ve done. Bullying can knock someone’s confidence, but we’ve got ways to help build yourself up.

We’re here to support you through all of this. We have loads of advice on dealing with bullying

Take care,

Sam
