I Fucked Up | Ask Sam

I sent a nude picture to someone on Snapchat, luckily I didn't include my face or anything that you would know was me or in my room, Now I think of that. I'm not too worried about it, but they are still threated to leak it. I think they've actually deleted the snap account as well. i did contact revenge porn about this and is it. their helpline is down at the moment so then they're going to talk to me tomorrow.

Hi there,

It’s never okay for someone to threaten or blackmail you. What they’ve done is wrong and against the law, but there are ways you can take control back.

There are a few things you can do when you’ve shared a nude and things have gone wrong. The first is using a tool called Report Remove. You can use Report Remove any time to submit nude images and videos of yourself to the IWF. The IWF will then make sure your content is never posted publicly online.

The next important thing to do is to stop replying to any messages and to talk about what’s happened. It can be helpful to take screenshots of any conversations if you can, if they’ve deleted their account you still may be able to view the messages. If they contact you on a new account, remember to keep ignoring them.

Talking about what’s happening to someone you trust can help you feel safer and less alone. You could speak to an adult you feel safe with at home, or with a professional you’ve been working with. Even if you’re not ready to talk to someone in your life, our counsellors are here to help.

Next, you can report what’s happened. You could do this yourself, or with the help of someone you trust. Most platforms and apps have a way to report this kind of abuse. It can also be helpful to block their account. You can also make a report to the police using CEOP. Reporting what’s happened to the police can help make sure this person can’t contact you in the future.

Lastly, it’s important that you take time to remember that you don’t deserve to feel bad about what happened. Someone else taking your images or videos and using them to hurt you isn’t your fault.

When we share things online that we regret, sometimes the best thing you can do is focus on what you’d do next time. We’ve got lots of advice on trusting people online and thinking about your safety. Childline is there to support you with whatever happens next.

If you’re 18 or over some of the resources I’ve mentioned might not be available for you, but you can still get help from the Revenge Porn Helpline.

Take care,

Sam
