Can I use childline as an adult if I don't have anyone else who will listen to me? | Ask Sam

Hi Sam,

I'm 17, turning 18 later this year. I've been in foster care since I was 7 and I will have completely left care early next year. I know that when I leave care I will be cut off and have no one to talk to when I'm struggling or just have questions. I'm just wondering if I can still use childline as an adult with no other resources?

Hi there,

You can continue to contact Childline and use your account until your 19th birthday. This means that when you’re 18 you can still get support from a Childline counsellor, post on the message boards, or use other parts of the site.

Getting older can often mean changes to the services that are supporting you. That change can be difficult, especially when you’re turning 18, so it’s good to get any support you can. It would be good to talk to your social worker about how you’re feeling towards leaving care. They will be able to support you so that this change can happen as smoothly as possible. They would also be able to talk to you about specific support groups in your area.

Even after you’ve turned 19, there are still places you can get support. The Samaritans are a listening service for adults that anyone can talk to, and you can get advice and support from The Mix any time. We’ve also got lots of advice for when you turn 19.

Whether it’s Childline, your social worker, or other services working with you, it’s good to talk about these changes. Taking time to talk about the future can help you plan and feel more confident. No matter how old you are, you never deserve to feel alone.

Take care,

Sam
