Pressure to be in a relationship

If you're feeling lonely, left out or feeling the pressure to meet other people's expectations, our advice might help.

Sometimes, it can feel like all your friends and everyone around you is in a relationship. Certain times of the year, like Valentines Day, can make it feel even more like everyone has that special someone in their life. But you're not alone and although it might not feel like it, many people are single too.

Think about why you want a relationship

Is it something you really want, or is it because all your friends are in relationships and you feel left out? What do you want from a relationship and will it add anything to your life? Sometimes, our idea of a relationship can be different to the reality.

Maybe you don't really want a relationship

There are lots of reasons why you might not want to be in a relationship, and that's always ok. It can be hard to explain this to people, but you have the right to do what’s best for you.

Talking helps

One of the best ways to deal with feeling lonely and left out is to talk to someone. The people around you probably won't know how you're feeling but by talking to them, you're giving them the chance to support you. And, you never know, they might feel the same way about things as you do. If you do feel like talking about how you feel you can talk to other young people on our message boards.

Remember that the important thing is to be happy, whether that means being in a relationship or not. If there's ever anything on your mind, big or small, our counsellors are always here for you.
