I posted a video briefly showing my cuts and my friend has been nagging me to tell someone but I feel the way she's trying to help me is kind of peer pressure. I don’t feel talking to an adult that directly knows me. Any advice?
Sam
Hi there,
It’s natural for your friends or the people around you to be worried about your self-harm. Them pushing you to get the right support can feel difficult, but it’s all about wanting you to get help.
If someone is trying to help you but it doesn’t feel helpful, it’s okay to talk to them about it. It can help to focus on the kinds of things that does help with your self-harm. This might be having someone to listen, distractions, or needing a bit of space. You can’t stop someone worrying or caring about you, but it can help to work together in ways you find supportive.
Even when it feels difficult to talk to an adult, there are things to make it easier. We’ve got lots of advice to plan the conversation, or you could even write it out in a letter. It’s also okay to ask your friend to help you start the conversation or to tell someone for you.
Sometimes it can feel safer sharing videos of what’s happening, but this isn’t always the best choice. Videos of self-harm will often won’t be allowed on platforms because they can be triggering or upsetting for other people. Remember, if you ever do want support, you can talk to Childline any time.
Take care,
Sam
