To Sam

I am depressed | Ask Sam

Hi, I’m struggling a lot with my emotions lately. Small mistakes feel huge, and I get overwhelmed very easily. I’ve been dealing with low mood for a long time and it’s becoming really hard to cope on my own.

I don’t want to feel like this anymore, and I think I need someone to talk to who can help me understand what’s going on.

I’m not in danger, but I’m finding things very difficult and I’d really appreciate some support.

Hi there,

It’s natural to have times when you’re feeling low or things feel more difficult. It might be that something has happened to make you feel this way, or it could be lots of little things. Sometimes you might not know any reason at all. Getting support is the right thing to do.

There are lots of ways to get support, the most important thing you can do is to talk about these feelings. Talking openly about things can help you to understand them more and means that you won’t feel so alone. Try thinking about whether anyone has noticed how you’re feeling, you could also think about any adults you’d feel safe asking you about it.

You don’t need to share everything at once. You could write about things in a letter at first if that feels easier, or just say a couple of words.  Remember, you don’t need to feel guilty or justify asking for help, you deserve to feel supported.

As well as talking about things, it can help to think about things you can do to feel positive. Even small things every day can help. You could take time at the end of the day to focus on things you’ve done well or that you feel grateful for.

Making time to do things you enjoy, or which gives you a sense of satisfaction can help as well. It can be hard to do things like this when mistakes or setbacks feel overwhelming, so it can also help to make a plan of ways to cope if that happens.

Even if you’re not sure who to talk to or where to start, you’re not alone. You can get support from a counsellor at Childline any time. They’re here to help you cope with anything in life, and can give you a safe space to talk about anything.

Take care,

Sam
