Hi there,

Trauma is an emotional response to a stressful or dangerous event. It could be something that happened once or for a long time, it could also be something you’ve witnessed. Trauma can affect you in lots of different ways, but with time and the right support you can start to heal and feel differently.

Talking is one of the most important ways to start healing. Healing can mean lots of different things, but it can help to open up. This could be with someone at home, a family friend, teacher, or even a doctor. Talking about things can feel very difficult, but talking about it in a safe, supportive environment can really help. We’ve got advice to help you start.

It’s natural to need ways to cope with your trauma, it can have a big impact on how you think, feel and behave. Learning new or healthier ways of thinking and behaving can be one way to help on the path of healing.

It can take time to recognise the thoughts and feelings you want to work on. Keeping a journal can be a good way to see if there are any patterns or triggers to behaviours you want to change. There are lots of ways to keep a journal, including using the mood journal.

Lastly, it’s important to be patient and kind to yourself. Sometimes you might make progress, while others it can feel like you have relapsed. Remember that this is a normal part of the process of change.

When things are getting too much, it can help to get support. That could mean talking to Childline, or you may find it helpful to look at our coping kit for ideas to deal with things right now.

Take care,

Sam
