Ask Sam letter

To Sam

I have read through a few sites ect... About anxiety, mainly because I constantly feel worried about minor little things... I am unsure whether I actually have anxiety of not but I don't know who to talk to so that my parents don't have to find out...
could you offer some advice please?

It can be normal to have times in your life when you worry or feel more anxious than usual. This can be caused by stressful events like exams, change, family arguments or money issues. In your case I can hear that you are constantly feeling worried. You may need to talk to someone for help with that. This is often called anxiety.

You say you’ve read through a few websites and while it can help to learn about an issue, it’s important to remember that it can sometimes also make you worry more or give you wrong information.

The best person to talk to is your doctor. You can make an appointment to see a doctor by yourself (or with a friend if you wanted to).  A doctor is usually confidential unless they think you may be at risk of harm but you can ask them that before you say anything. They may suggest things which can help manage or reduce the anxiety such as coping techniques, counselling or in some cases medication.

Some people find it helps to write down what they’d like to say to the doctor and take it with them. This can help you be clear about what you are going through and how it is affecting you. You can get ready to speak to a doctor by using Doc Ready.

Some people who experience anxiety find it really helps to talk to someone about it – especially if there are things in life which are making you feel anxious. You can always talk to a Childline counsellor by phone or online.

Hope this helps.
Take care,
