Tattoo | Ask Sam

Hi Sam. I am 15 years old, almost 16 and I got a tattoo on my arm about two months ago. I really wanted one at the time and I spent all my time thinking about it. Now that I have the tattoo, I feel really bad. I want it removed so bad, and I can't do anything about it, especially because it costs so much. I feel really stupid and embarrassed and now I have to cover it up so no one sees it. I don't know why I ever thought it would be a good idea.

Hi there,

Lots of people can have second thoughts after getting a tattoo and it’s understandable you wouldn’t want it anymore if you’re feeling.

Tattoo removal can be expensive, and it is important to wait until your 18 to get one done. Even though you are under 18, the tattoo removal process would take a lot of time, money and effort. Even if you can’t remove it right now, there can be ways to feel more comfortable with it.

Although you might want to immediately cover up and change it, it’s important to remember you’re still the same person with or without the tattoo, and a tattoo does not define the person you are or want to become. Feelings can change so it might help to give yourself some space and time to get used to it.  It can also help to think about different ways to feel confident about how you look.

If you were to tell your parents, or a trusted teacher, it could help. You could even write what you're feeling in a note so you don’t have to directly face them.

If you're struggling with this, talking to a Childline councillor can help you plan things out before taking your first steps.

Take care,

Sam
