Hi there,

Throughout your period you have different levels of hormones in your body, this can affect your body and emotions. Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is the name for some of the feelings you might have before your period. Lots of people who have periods experience some discomfort, but if the pain is too much there are things that can help.

Pain during periods is usually caused by the womb trying to push out the blood. Gentle exercises like yoga, swimming, or walking can help to alleviate the pain. You can also use a hot water bottle and ask your parents or carers about pain relief you can use. If the pain or symptoms you’re experiencing is so severe that it affects your daily life, it can be a good idea to speak to your doctor.

Knowing more about what happens during your period can help you see if there are any patterns or triggers to your symptoms. It can help others, like your doctor, have a detailed idea of what happens. You can write down what’s happening and when in a diary, or use the Childline mood journal as a way of tracking your periods and any pain.

Many young people talk about the effect periods can have on them, from what they wear to how they feel. This is something you can discuss with others on the message boards, where you can see what has helped others cope with period pain and talk about things like changes in moods.

Take care,

Sam
