Hi there,

It can feel hurtful when you’re starting to feel isolated, especially when it’s from the people you’re close to. You deserve to feel included and cared for at home.

For lots of deaf people, it can be common to have hearing or non-disabled people forget to communicate well or include them. This could be as simple as not making the time to communicate with you. Even when it’s not on purpose, it can still feel isolating and it’s not okay for it to happen.

If you feel safe to, it can help to express to your family how you have been feeling at home. Letting people know when you’re feeling isolated can remind them how important it is to include everyone. When there are particular things people are doing that makes it hard to communicate, it can help to share a list of ways they could communicate better.

When you’re the only deaf person you know or spend time with, that can feel isolating. Building friendships can take time, and the NDCS has lots of tips to help you start. You could also speak to someone at school or home about local groups or meetings where you can meet other deaf young people. Having people who share the same experiences can help show you that you’re not alone.

Childline is always here to support you. Sharing what’s happening with a Childline counsellor can help you to think about ways to cope and feel less alone. There are lots of ways to contact us, including using SignVideo to speak to a counsellor in BSL.

Take care,

Sam
