Dyshidrotic Eczema | Ask Sam

I have Dyshidrotic Eczema and I have just learnt that it is chronic. I can't shake off the feeling that it will stick with me for the rest of my entire life and I am only 15. I have a cream to heal my skin when it gets damaged but now I have to do that for the rest of my WHOLE life! Like as in the rest of my life. And there’s no second chances. It is inevitable and I am stuck knowing that I will never look at my fingers and not see it. It will never go away, no matter how hard I or anybody else tries, it will literally never ever leave and I will FOREVER suffer until I actually die, and that’s what I struggle with. Knowing that the situation I am in is hopeless and I will never live without it.

Hi there,

Learning you’ve got a health condition that’s going to affect you for the rest of your life is a huge amount to deal with. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed about it, and it’s okay to need time to adjust.

You may not be able to change your condition, but there are things you can focus on to try and make it easier. First, remember that what you’re feeling is natural and that lots of people struggle with the knowledge that a condition isn’t going to go away. It’s important to get support in your life, and to talk about these feelings.

Sharing how you’re feeling with your GP, someone you trust, or with a Childline counsellor can help. It can help others to know when you might need extra support, or it can help them plan for ways to make things easier. You never need to go through these kinds of emotions alone.

Building an understanding of your eczema can also help. Over time, you’ll learn more about what triggers or improves your eczema. Learning about tips to get into a routine with your cream or finding more about how it works can help you feel more in control and make things feel less overwhelming.

Remember that a health condition doesn’t need to define who you are. For some conditions, you might need to think a lot about ways to reach your goals, for others it might be that you just need a bit of support. Working with the people close to you can help you keep focused on the future and what you want to achieve. Whatever you want to do, Childline is always here to support you.

Take care,

Sam
