Worried about a lump

Hi, I'm a 14 year old girl and my name is L***. Whilst in the bath the other day I came across a hard m&m sized lump under my left nipple, I already got 'breast buds' at the age of 11 but understood what they were, I'm quite a late developer and dont have full breasts but I am very worried about this lump. It doesnt hurt and is hard and movable, I am too scared to tell anyone but I'm afraid that it could be serious :( thank you

Hi there,

Thanks for your letter. I can hear you're worried. You've done the right thing getting in touch.

It's quite normal for young women to have lumps in their breasts during puberty and there are lots of different reasons why lumps develop. Changes to hormones that happen during puberty are common. This could be the reason behind the lump. You've probably noticed other changes to your body, too.

You mentioned that you've had breast buds before and it sounds as though this could be a similar thing. I'm not medically trained though, so I think it would be a good idea for you to speak to your doctor - hopefully this will help put your mind at ease too. It’s always better to be safe and get something like this checked out – even if it turns out to be nothing harmful.

It can be scary to talk about a part of our body that's so personal, but just remember that doctors see lots of young people every week with similar worries. It might help to take someone with you - a parent, carer or friend maybe, although you can go to see your GP on your own. You don't need to have an adult with you even if you're younger than 16.

I’m glad that you got in touch and I hope this response has helped. If you want to talk about this some more, our counsellors are always available to listen to you whenever you want to talk. You can contact us on 0800 1111, online in a 1-2-1 chat or email.

Take care,
Sam
