Hi there,

Thanks for your letter.

It sounds like you are finding it hard to cope with your granddad being unwell. I’m glad you wrote to me to get some help.

When someone close to us is not well and has to go to hospital, it can make us feel very worried for them. We can also feel confused and sad. It's natural to want to know everything about what is going to happen to them. At times like this it can really help to talk to someone you trust about how you have been feeling. Keeping these kinds of feelings inside can make them feel bigger and more difficult to manage. You might like to think about letting your parents or carers know that you are finding things difficult right now.

Of course, you can always talk to a ChildLine counsellor as a way to let out your feelings. They are always there to listen and support you. You can do that by phoning them free on 0800 1111, by sending an email or by logging on for a 1-2-1 chat. You could also have a look around our message boards to see how other young people cope in similar situations.

I wonder whether you will be able to visit your granddad in hospital. Some people find it can be quite boring in hospital and patients often look forward to having visitors. You might like to think about taking something with you that your granddad would like, such as a game to play together, a card you have made or something nice for him to eat. If you are not able to visit, perhaps you could ask someone else to take something to your granddad for you.

I hope this helps.

Take care,
Sam
