Maths!! | Ask Sam

At school, when we do maths, everyone is disappointed and wishes we could do something more fun. I love maths so I find this really annoying. When we had some free time, everyone was running around, and playing board games, and other things but I was doing maths by myself. A lot of people think I’m a weird nerd and some people don’t want to be my friend anymore. It has now been going on for so long, I’m struggling to cope!!!!!!!!

Hi there,

There’s nothing wrong with loving maths. Lots of people enjoy doing maths for all kinds of reasons, even when it’s not everyone’s favourite subject.

Whether it’s maths or anything else, it’s natural for friends to like different things. Even when your friends like different things to you, it’s never okay for them to make you feel bad.

If you’re starting to feel isolated, there are lots of things you can do. For example, some schools will run maths clubs or activities so that others who enjoy it to can come together. You could ask your teacher about how they could support you to set one up. It can also help to think about ways to compromise with your friends. This could mean taking some break times to do maths, and others to do things you all enjoy.

If your friends keep making you feel bad for what you enjoy or try to isolate you, then that’s a form of bullying. Being made to feel bad isn’t your fault and you should always get support with it. It can help to talk to an adult you trust about what’s happening, or get help from one of our counsellors.

Whether you keep learning new things or just do the occasional puzzle, there’s always space to enjoy maths in your life.

Take care,

Sam
