I have recently changed primary school and i miss my old school and friends. I don't sleep well and cry a lot and don't want to play with other kids at my new school. there is one boy who always calls me nasty names and tells the others to join in. I hate going to school.

Hi

It’s good to hear from you. I can see that you’re missing your old school and your friends. It sounds like this is really upsetting you and is stopping you from enjoying your new school.

It is natural to miss people and places that we really like. It’s also natural to feel a bit lost and uncomfortable in a new setting at first. It might take some time to get used to your new primary school and make friends there. Sometimes when we feel sad or upset, it’s hard to see anything good in a situation. That doesn’t mean that you won’t find anyone friendly at your new school given time. I can see that you had good friends at your old school, and that makes me think you will be able to make some new friends when you feel ready. Maybe you could think about joining a club or sports team at your new school, to try and meet people outside of lesson time?

You have mentioned that one of the boys at the new school is calling you nasty names and is encouraging others to join in. This is bullying and it is wrong. No one has the right to upset you or make you feel uncomfortable and it’s important that someone helps to make this stop. I wonder how you would feel talking to a trusted adult about the bullying? This person you choose to talk to could be your class teacher, school counsellor, school nurse or a parent? They might also be able to help you find some kinder people in your class to spend time with.

You can also find more information about school, friendships and bullying in the Explore pages of the Childline website. If you don’t have any adults you can talk to, you could speak to a counsellor at ChildLine instead. You can do this by calling 0800 1111 (this is a free call and it won’t show on the bill)

Take care
