Hi Sam, I'm homeschooled and struggle to stick to a schedule. I've tried writing down the lessons i need to do, setting reminders on my devices, even completely shutting down my phone when i need to work but i always seem to get distracted from my work and end up doing something else like sewing or i somehow end up going for a walk. i don't know how to stay concentrated. School made me really unhappy all the time and it was always the same there, i could never focus on my work. What do i do?
Hi there,
Concentrating on things like schoolwork can be hard when you’re easily distracted. It’s great that you’ve created a schedule and reminders, finding what works for you can take time and there are lots of things that might help.
When trying a new schedule, it’s important to remember that it’s okay to change parts that aren’t working. For example, it might be helpful to note times of day when it’s more difficult to concentrate. You can then schedule in a break for that time to do something you enjoy.
Making a comfortable environment can also be helpful, what works can be different for everyone. Think about whether music, white noise, or silence is helpful, make sure there’s enough light, and have any supplies you need nearby. The message boards can be a great place to read about what other people find helpful when focusing on schoolwork.
Setting timers to say how long to focus can help. For example, set 20 minutes to focus on schoolwork before then taking a 5-minute break. If 20 minutes ends up feeling too long, you could make it shorter to find a time that works. Making time for breaks can allow our brains to rest.
It’s important to get support when you’re struggling to concentrate. When you’re homeschooled the support you have might vary, you could speak to someone at home or another adult you trust. If you’re not sure who to speak to, remember that you can always get support from Childline.
Take care,
Sam
