Fostering | Ask Sam

About 6 months ago, my parents started expressing interest in fostering and at first i was on board with it all because obviously its a nice thing to do, but the more i think about it the less confident i get.

My parents and sister are right up for it as well and i feel really bad and it sounds really selfish that im the only one in my family who doesn't want to foster and i dont know how to tell my parents this without them being disappointed or whatever. Do you get me or am i being like really selfish? (Please be honest <3)

Thanks xxx

Hi there,

There are lots of things to consider when a family is deciding whether they want to foster a baby, child, or young person. It’s natural for you to start having doubts when you think about it more. Fostering is a big decision for any family, and it’s never selfish to be honest about what you’re feeling.

It can help to think about the reasons you’re feeling uncomfortable. Taking time to understand what you do and don’t like about the idea of fostering, what questions you have, and what you would like to happen can all help make sharing how you’re feeling easier. You could try writing this down and using it to help you share what’s on your mind.

You can’t control how your parents might react, but it can help to think about how you want to start the conversation. You could share how you’re feeling, with questions, or with your doubts. Going into detail about what makes you feel uncomfortable can help them to understand and support you.

Remember, it’s always okay for your feelings to change over time. If you’re ever unsure about something, you can get support from Childline any time.

Take care,

Sam
