Revenge | Ask Sam

Hi Sam,

How are you?

Do you think it is bad to get revenge on someone if it undoes their bad action. If someone steals something from you and there is absolutely no way to get it back does stealing the exact amount of money from them to buy a new one make you a bad person. I would rather just get the item back or have someone else sort it out but that's impossible and it's happened heaps of times so the only option is to let them keep stealing my stuff and do nothing or take the exact amount of money from them to rebuy an item and if I just don't take the money that is almost saying you accept it's ok for them to steal from you.

Hi there,

It’s natural to want justice when someone has done something to hurt you, revenge isn’t the way to get justice though. Trying to hurt or do wrong to someone who’s hurt you might feel like it would help, but it can put you in danger and won’t change things in the future.

Knowing that revenge is wrong can be difficult when it feels like it’s your only option. Even if you can’t change what’s happened in the past, it can help to focus on ways to prevent things in the future. Remember, if someone is stealing from you, it’s okay to report this to the police and to an adult you trust.

Every situation is different, but it’s always good to take time to think before deciding what to do. Try sharing what’s happening with a counsellor at Childline, they’re there to offer support without judgement and can give you space to think about what you feel is best.

Take care,

Sam
