To Sam

I have a concern about my neighbours

Hi, I live in a block of flats, and as I am not that young I go to at 11pm, quite a lot of the time I will hear my upstairs neighbours arguing, it is not that often but 5 times out 10 someone else within the block have called to police to sort it out, but after they have left they would continue arguing after 30 minutes, my upstairs neighbours have 2 older children and I believe either 1 or 2 younger children, when ever I see the 2 oldest they seem happy, but I'm still concerned for their mental health. Is there anything I can do to help them?

Hi there,

Arguments can be upsetting to witness or to listen to, even when you’re not directly involved. It’s natural for families to fight sometimes, but if it’s happening all the time or you’re worried about abuse then that’s not safe. It’s always right to speak out if you have any worries about a child or young person, even when you don’t know for sure what is happening.

There are lots of ways to get support, and the best way is to speak to a responsible adult, like a teacher at school or college, a family member or another trusted adult in your local community. If you are ever worried about you or someone else being in danger, it’s important to speak to a trusted adult or call 999 for urgent help and support.

Sometimes feeling your concern isn’t worth reporting or thinking you may get someone into trouble can stop people reaching out. Even when other people have tried to get help in the past, that should never stop you or someone supporting you from reporting your worries too.

Anyone can report any concerns to the NSPCC Helpline. They can pass on any concerns you have and give advice when you’re not sure. The NSPCC website has some really helpful guidance and information.

Remember, you don’t need to do anything on your own. Childline is here to support you and you can always come and talk this through with a Childline counsellor. Talking about what’s happening can help you to feel more confident about what to do next.

Take care,

Sam
