Sam

Hi there,

Lots of girls feel frightened about starting their periods. But everyone’s experience of having periods is different. Although some people find them painful, there are things that you can do to cope with the pain. Anybody who has a lot of pain with their periods should visit their doctor. They can make suggestions to help make periods easier to manage.

You mentioned that you heard your mum scream when she was having a period, and this sounds like it was really frightening for you. It could help to talk to your mum and explain that you’re worried after seeing her experience. She might be able to explain a bit more about what was happening and support you with any worries you’re having.

Things like doing gentle exercise or having a warm bath or shower can help to soothe period pains. You can also use a covered hot water bottle or a heat pad against your abdomen (tummy area) to help relieve any pain you might feel.
If you’d like to talk more about this worry, please remember that you can always talk to one of our counsellors who are there to support you.

Thanks for writing.

Take care,
Sam
