Hi there,
Thank you for writing to me.
Starting periods can often be a worrying time and it's normal to have concerns about what might happen and when you will start. It seems like you may be worried that it will come at a time when you least expect it.
While no one knows exactly when their first period will start, there are things you can do to feel more ready for it. Maybe talking to the person you live with or a trusted adult about your concerns and if they would be able to buy you sanitary towels or tampons which you might want to keep in your bag.
You might also like to consider wearing a panty liner to protect you against any leaking that may happen if you unexpectedly have a period as well as having a spare change of underwear.
Youve asked me whether or not its ok to wear a skirt when youve got your period.
Wearing pads or tampons should catch the blood, so its fine to wear whatever clothes you feel most comfortable and confident in.
You may find it useful to look at information about puberty and periods in Explore. You might also find it helpful to ask other young people about their experiences, by posting a message in the puberty message boards.
If you would like to talk more about this with a Childline counsellor, you can do this by calling 0800 1111, logging in for a 1-2-1 chat or sending them an email.
Take care,
Sam.

You can ask me about anything you want, there's nothing too big or small. I read every single letter but I can only answer a few each week. My replies are published here on my page.
