Sam

Hi there,

Thanks for your letter. You’ve done the right thing getting in touch.

I can hear that things are difficult for you right now. I’m sensing from what you’ve said that perhaps after school and evenings are when you feel the most lonely and bored.

I just want you to know that feeling lonely or isolated at times is normal, and young people sometimes go through periods of feeling like this throughout their lives. We have a page about feeling lonely that you might find helpful.

One idea to make friends is to join a group or club to meet people with the same interests as you. From what you’ve shared, it sounds as though you’d like to meet some friends who live nearer to you, so perhaps thinking about your interests and researching local clubs for young people would be a good place to start.

You also mentioned that you have friends, who don’t live nearby. I wonder how it would feel to speak to these friends after school over the phone or online. You could talk to them about your day and you could always ask them for advice on how to make friends too.

Finally, it might be helpful for you to create a list of things you can do alone, so if you are at home bored you can pick something off the list to do. This might be drawing, baking, listening to music, reading – anything you enjoy doing.

I hope this information has been useful, and remember ChildLine counsellors are always here to listen to you whenever you are feeling lonely and want to talk. You can call for free on 0800 1111, log on for a 1-2-1 chat or send an email.

Take care,
Sam.
