Hi there

There can be a lot of pressure to look a certain way and to fit in with how everyone else looks. What we eat and how we look are not always connected and it’s important to get help if you find yourself changing the way you eat because of negative thoughts.

It’s usual for a lot of people to feel affected by what they see, not only amongst their friends but in films, videos and magazines. Some images can lead you to believe there is such thing as a 'perfect figure' or 'perfect skin'. It can be hard to understand that everyone is different and there really is no such thing as the perfect body.

Sometimes when we feel low about ourselves we can give ourselves a hard time about the way we look. We might pick out different parts of our body and wish they were different. This can have an effect on other areas of your life such as having to eat meals like dinner.

Making yourself sick after meals can lead to eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia and binge eating. Eating disorders are serious conditions. Stopping yourself from eating can be really dangerous and affect your health. If you feel the way you eat is unhealthy, it’s okay to ask for help.

Accepting yourself for who you are can be difficult to do. It’s a good idea to look at what a healthy balanced diet looks like. It’s not just about how much you eat, but what you eat too. It may be best to talk to a doctor for advice before you make any big changes to your diet. A doctor can give you advice around having a healthy diet and on a sensible eating and exercise plan that is right for you.

You are always welcome to talk to Childline about how you are feeling. Our counsellors are here to listen and to support you whenever you feel you need it.

Take care

Sam
