Hi there,

The attacks in Paris and other places can be really scary, and you are not alone in how you feel. It’s always okay to talk about your feelings, especially when they’re really affecting you.

Nobody has the right to judge you based on the colour of your skin - this is racist, and is wrong.  Whether this is happening at school, work, or in public, it should not be happening.

You are within your rights to question people if you feel that they are being unfair and racist towards you. It can sometimes help to talk to someone about how we are feeling, perhaps a trusted adult at home or at school.

You and your own identity are very important. And what happened in Paris is not a reflection on you. It is discrimination to believe this. Our society is made up of many different groups of people, and regardless of how you look, or the colour of your skin, you are the only responsible for yourself – and your identity comes from the things that you do, and your own behaviours, regardless of how those around you act.

You can talk to a counsellor about this, they will always be here to chat about this confidentially. Thanks for your letter.

Take care,
Sam
