Hi there,

First of all, it’s great that you are planning to see your doctor. This shows that you recognise that you might need medical advice and that you know what to do to get it. Well done.

You have a right to confidential healthcare and treatment, no matter how old you are. This means that when see your doctor, it’s private and nobody will tell anybody else unless you say they can. This includes any prescriptions for medicines that your doctor gives you. The only time a doctor can speak to someone else about you without your permission is when there is a danger that your safety, or someone else’s safety, might be at risk.

If you are under 16, your doctor needs to be sure that you understand and are able to make your own decisions about your medical treatment. To be on the safe side, tell your doctor at the start of your appointment that you don’t want your mum and dad to know. If you are over 16 your doctor won’t tell anybody else about your medical treatment.

Your doctor might suggest that you talk to other people, or ask if they can talk to somebody on your behalf. You don’t have to agree to this, and you can say no to any treatment that you don’t feel is right for you.

I can see from your letter that you hope your doctor will prescribe you something. Your doctor will be able to talk to you about any medicines you might need, including any risks or side effects. If your doctor gives you a prescription, you can then take this to a pharmacist. If you live in England and are under 16, or if you are aged 16-18 and in full-time education, then your prescription is free. If you live in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, prescriptions are free at any age.
