Hi,

Sometimes the fear about a new experience can be more difficult or scary that the actual event. Everyone’s experience of pain is different, but injections aren’t meant to hurt you. You may feel a small prick, but this shouldn’t ‘really hurt.’ It will be over very quickly.

It sounds difficult that your friend is winding you up. Friends should be there to support you, but it sounds like this friend is making you scared. You could think about what you might like to say to this friend to make them stop. Telling someone how you feel doesn’t always change things. But it can help them understand what things are really like from your side. She might not realise that what she's saying is affecting you.

You might also find it helpful to think about ways to distract yourself during the injection. Perhaps you could sing your favourite song to yourself or imagine somewhere relaxed and happy. You could talk to the nurse about how worried you are before. They will be able to explain more about it.

Talking to an adult you trust about what’s happening could be a good way to release your anxiety. You could also ask about their personal experiences of injections. You could also ask a teacher if you can talk to some people from the year above about their experiences so that they can give you a clearer idea of what it really feels like.

Remember, you can always talk to a ChildLine counsellor. They are always there to support you. You are welcome to come through to counsellor anytime by calling free on 0800 1111 or having a 1-2-1 chat.

I hope this helps,
Sam
