Hi there,

I can hear you're worried and confused about what to do next. The first step is to take a pregnancy test to see if you are pregnant, as there are some other medical problems that can cause a period to be late. You can get a test done at lots of sexual health clinics and services all around the country. This NHS search can show you the nearest one. You can also buy one from a supermarket or pharmacy.

Many young people tell me they prefer to get a test done by a nurse at one of the specialist clinics near them as there is less chance of getting the result wrong. A test at a clinic is also free.

Taking a test on your own can also feel very scary, particularly if it is positive. Taking a test with a professional gives you the chance to talk through your options with someone who will support you. A professional can also help you work out when is the best time to take a test. Sometimes it can be possible to take a test too early which would show as negative but a later test may turn out positive.

You should never feel judged when you get a test. Many services work with young people every day and know that mistakes can happen. If the test does turn out to be negative and you still haven’t had your period, it’s a good idea to get this checked out by a doctor, just to rule out anything else which might be delaying your period.

You can also talk to your doctor, nurse or sexual health service about different types of contraception which can give extra protection against pregnancy.

If you are pregnant then finding out early leaves you with more options. Deciding what to do next can be a really difficult decision, and one which you may want to talk through with someone to make sure you make the right choice for both you and the unborn baby.

Depending on where you live and your own beliefs, there are usually three options you have if you find out you are pregnant.

1. Keep the baby and bring the baby up.
2. Keep the baby and let someone else to bring the baby up through adoption.
3. Terminate the pregnancy through abortion.

You can find out other young people’s experience of pregnancy and having a baby on the ChildLine message boards.

You may want to have a think about if there is anyone you would feel comfortable talking through your options with. This could be your boyfriend, family, doctor, school nurse, teacher or family friend. They can help you decide how you would feel if you are pregnant and help decide what is best for you.

You can always talk to a counsellor at ChildLine. They will be there to support you no matter how you are feeling or what you decide to do.

Take care,
Sam
