High school

Dear Sam,

I'm going to a different high school than all of my friends I don't know anyone. Everyone says "Oh you'll make new freinds" But it's not that, I'm going away from all of my other friends. Today was our last day and it suddenly hit me. I'm never going to see any of them ever again. I had a choice to either go to the same school as everyone else or go to a different school which is better for education but is far away and no one I know goes there like I said. I'm not worried about making new friends I just need some way to stop being upset and to stop feeling guilty about choosing a different school to all of my friends. Please help.

Hi there,

Thanks for your message.

It sounds like you have had to make a really tough decision recently and are now starting to realise the impact this decision will have on your future. You seem to know what you want in life by choosing to aim for a good education so well done for that.

From what you’ve said, it seems like you feel guilty right now that your future goal will affect your relationship with your friends. The fact that you are even having these feelings of guilt and being upset show that you care about your friends and how they feel. That is a sign of a good friend. It’s important to remember that your friends should also want what is best for you even though the separation may be hard.

You sound sure that you will never see your friends again but maybe you could organise to meet up or stay in touch through emails or texting. Perhaps you could also think about sharing how you feel with your friends as they may be able to support you through this big change in your life.

Changing schools can be an exciting time as you will experience a new school and have the opportunity to make new friends but this can also be an anxious time. Perhaps you could have a look at the Childline message boards to read what other young people going through similar situations have said or post your own message to receive some more advice.

Remember Childline counsellors are here if you would like to talk this through an email, 1-2-1 chat or you can call our freephone helpline on 0800 1111. It can help to talk through how you are feeling. I hope this helps.

Take care,

Sam
