Contraceptive Implant!

Hello, Im under 16 (15) and I have had sex with my boyfriend using contraception, I know that over the age of 16 you can get the implant without parent consent, is it possible for a 15 year old to? My parents do not know about me and my boyfriend I am just to scared to tell them! Shall I wait till I am 16 to get the implant or just persuade my parents to let me (I am not sure wether or not the would let me, but I do know that they definitely do not want grandchildren)!

what should i do

Hi there,

Thank you for writing to me.

It sounds like you have been thinking about having sex responsibly and considering your different options. I think it’s good to think about. Sex should be something which is enjoyable and safe for everyone involved, so it’s important to think about what’s right for you.

Condoms are the only way to protect against sexually transmitted infections. If you choose to stop using them it’s a good idea to get a check-up at a doctor’s surgery or sexual health clinic, even if neither of you have had sex with someone else. Brook can help you can find out more about sexual health services in your local area, or you can search for an NHS clinic

You asked whether you can get the implant at 15 without your parents knowing. Contraception services are free and confidential. You can find out more about this from the NHS guide to the contraceptive implant.

A lot of parents don’t like the idea of their children having sex, but usually they also understand that eventually it’s something that will happen. Sometimes it just takes them a little time to get used to. If you think your parents would be very against it, you may choose not to tell them.

Either way, it can be helpful to have the support of an adult you trust when it comes to making decisions about your health. ChildLine is here to support you. You are always welcome to talk to one of our counsellors either by calling on 0800 1111, sending an email or logging on for a 1-2-1 chat.

Take care,
Sam
