Ask Sam

One of the best things about being you is that you are unique and you have your own way of talking and expressing yourself. Other people (especially at school) may sometimes pick on things about you, but it’s important to remember that this is bullying and it’s not okay.

No one has the right to put you down and if you hate the way that people are treating you then you can get support. You could try talking to someone you trust at school or at home and let them know when the bullying is happening so that they can help it stop.

Sometimes even friends can use bullying behaviour. You could try being assertive with them to help you stand up for yourself. One thing you can try is looking straight at someone making fun of you and saying ‘this is how I talk and I like it’, or you can ask them why they are pointing this out when everyone is different anyway.

If people have made you feel low or shy about yourself, maybe get some support for building your self-esteem.  It may help to talk to a school counsellor about how you’re feeling or you can talk to a ChildLine counsellor anytime.

Remember that you are unique and that’s what makes you special.

Take care,
