I am really scared in case there is a fire in our house. I love my family so much, and I don't want anyone to get hurt or even die.

Hi there,

There are lots of things that can frighten us, and the thought of losing the people we love is one of the most difficult to cope with. Thoughts about things we can’t predict or control can be hard to put out of our mind once they’re there, but there are ways to feel better about them.

It’s quite normal to have fears of things like this. However, when the fear starts to really affect you, it’s time to face up to those fears and beat them.

There are many things we can’t control. This can make the future seem scary and uncertain. Whenever you feel like this it can be good to look at what you can control and take hold of those things. In this case you can’t completely control whether there is ever a fire in your house, but you can take control of some small things.

Taking a few simple steps to make the house safer can make you feel a lot better. You can ask your family to make sure there are working smoke detectors throughout the house and to make an escape plan with them in case there ever is a fire. Making sure everyone knows where they can get out of the house quickly and what people will do if there is a fire might help you feel reassured.

There will be other things that come up from time to time that make you worry about the future. Taking a step back to see if there are small things you can take control of might help you feel better about the things that nobody can predict.

I hope that helps. Do come and talk to a ChildLine counsellor if you want to say more.

Take care,
Sam
