I'm really nervous about talking to people about my problems. It sounds quite dramatic, but I feel like I have so much going on inside my head that I wouldn't even know where to start if I was to talk to one of the online counsellors, and I don't know what to expect either. What would I say to them?

Hi there,

Thanks for your letter. 

It feels like you have taken a brave step when you started talking to me about the things going on inside your head.

It can be difficult sometimes to know where to start when you decide you want to talk to someone. One of the hardest things can be trying to talk about things in some kind of order which makes sense both to you and to the person who is listening to you.  One way of ordering your thoughts is to start writing things down. You could have a fresh page for each of the issues and add things to them when thoughts come into your head. Sometimes separating problems and looking at them individually can help us to see them more clearly and make them easier to deal with.

If you wanted to talk to a counsellor at ChildLine, you can email if you feel that might be less stressful. You could choose one of the issues to start with and work through that and then move onto the next one. It is important for you to know that talking to ChildLine moves at the pace which suits you and you only have to tell them what you are comfortable talking about. Alternatively, if you wanted to go for an online chat, you could tell the counsellor the issues you have and then choose one initially to explore in that chat and move onto the next one in your next chat.  If you use the same account each time you go onto chat, you can ask the counsellor to read the notes from the previous chat which means that you don’t have to go over everything again.
