Ask Sam

Thank you for your message. You’re right when you say that your parents could tell that you’ve been on the ChildLine website, if they look at your computer history and cookies. ChildLine takes confidentiality really seriously, and we want you to feel safe about visiting the website.

There are steps that you can take to cover your tracks. To keep your parents from being able to see that you’ve been to ChildLine, you will need to:

  • delete all cookies from the Temporary Internet files on your computer
  • delete all the pages in your history folder

Deleting these files and pages isn't too difficult. If you read the Cover your tracks page you’ll be able to read more about how to do it. You’ll need to know which Internet Broswer you are using e.g. Internet Explorer, Google Chrome etc. You can also find out more there about how to keep your conversations with ChildLine private. For example, if you’re on the website and somebody walks in to the room, you could press the hide page button at the side of each page and the page would disappear.

If you have any more questions you can always speak to a ChildLine counsellor by calling the free helpline on 0800 1111 or you could log on for a 1-2-1 chat, which is a bit like instant messenger.

Thanks for writing to me

Take care,
