Kerrang! Waxing Lyrical Competition: The Winner
In May 2008 Kerrang! and ChildLine launched the Waxing Lyrical competition, inviting readers of Kerrang! to write lyrics about what matters to them. The competition had a huge response and out of all the entries that were submitted, five were short listed by a special judging panel: Kerrang! deputy editor Daniel Lane, Nick Woods from ChildLine and Funeral for a Friend singer Matt Davies. The five entries were then put to a public vote on the Kerrang! website and the lucky winner was Sophie.
Sophie's Winning Lyrics
"What are you gonna do to change your life?
What you gonna do to help others?
People are dying every single day.
Are you gonna stand up and shout?
Are you gonna make your voice count?
Change the town and you can change the world today.
If it don't work, we're gonna change anyway,
because we are lost in this time zone and place we call earth
and our lives are fading away.
We are confused, stuck and wasted on this planet
in the twenty first century.
Sometimes I get scare I'll die alone.
I really hate it when I'm on my own.
He's the only one for me.
Everyone just wants to live their life,
they don't care about doing what's right.
Humans only seem to destroy
like a dog with a baby's toy it's got to you, but it won't get to me, I'll set us all free"
The Prize
Sophie won a chance to meet Funeral For A Friend and go to a concert in London. She made a video diary about her day out and wrote a blog about winning the competition and what happened on her trip to London. Watch her video diary. (links to YouTube)
"Heya, I'm Sophie. I get Kerrang! magazine most weeks and one week I bought it and there was a competition for ChildLine called Waxing Lyrical where you had to write your own lyrics about a topic that you felt strongly about.
The prize was to meet one of my favourite bands Funeral for a Friend. I didn't think that I'd win but my mum told me to enter my lyrics so I did. Next thing I knew, I had won and I was going down to London with my mum and best friend Tatyana to meet them.
It was amazing and I met some wonderful people, like the camera man Steve, he made me laugh. Before I met them, I saw the lead singer on the phone outside, it was the weirdest thing! The sound check rocked, Tatyana said I went very pale when I first saw them, I literally felt like I was going to pass out!
They were really lovely people and answered all my questions, they also signed all of my stuff, even my ipod! We stayed for the gig afterwards and it brill, they played all my favourite songs and I really enjoyed it. All in all it was an awesome and I will never forget the experience. Thank you to everyone that made it so special."
