Hi Victoria,
Thanks for your letter in which you give me some information about your background, and also talk about your immediate worry that you might be pregnant.
You ask when you should take a pregnancy test. Most pregnancy tests work as soon as a period is late (so from the day after your period is due). If you don't have a regular cycle, it can be difficult to know when your period is due, so it is best to take the test three weeks after having unprotected sex. This is roughly how long it will take for the hormone levels to show up on the test.
You said that you had casual unprotected sex, so it would also be a good idea to get checked out for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). You can find out more about sex, sexual health and pregnancy on the Brook website. You could also have a look in the Explore section of this website where there is information on pregnancy.
If you would like to talk some more about any of the things you raise in your letter, please think about speaking to a ChildLine Counsellor. They won’t judge you or put you down and they are not easily shocked. Instead, they will listen and help talk you through your options. You can talk to a ChildLine counsellor by phoning for free on 0800 1111, or through the 1-2-1 online chat. What you say to ChildLine is kept confidential unless they are worried that you or someone else is in real danger.
Take care
Sam
