Hi there
Thanks for your letter. A lot of young people find it very difficult to come out, especially to their parents and school. You mentioned that that you were thinking of waiting until you were 14 - I don’t think there is any right or wrong time to come out and there is no way real of knowing how people will react. Unfortunately some people do find it hard to accept when someone is gay but it is important to remember that whether you are gay or straight you have the right to be happy and proud of who you are.
You might find it useful to take a look at the ChildLine message boards as this is where young people can share their experience and advice and you might find it useful to see what others have found helps them. Also, please remember that ChildLine would really like to support you with this and you are welcome to contact any time using the 1-2-1 chat service (like msn), ChildLine email or by phone 0800 1111
Another organisation that you might find useful is PACE. They offer telephone counselling for anyone with issues related to being gay, lesbian trans or bi-sexual. They offer support to family members too. You can contact them on 0808 180 7223 or have a look at their website www.pacehealth.org.uk
Take care
Sam
