Seeing my GP

I was wondereing, do you have to be a certain age to make an appointment with your GP? And if you're under 16/18 does your GP have the right to tell your parents about your visit or is it completely confidential? Thanks.

Hi,

Thanks for your really good question.

Young people under the age of 16 can see a doctor and give consent to their own treatment provided that the doctor thinks they fully understand what is involved. This applies to confidentiality as well.

This means you fully understand what they are saying, understand what your medical problem is and the treatment you will need. If a young person under 16 does not understand this, then parental consent will be needed.

Young people over the age of 16 but under 18 can give consent to their own treatment and it is not necessary to get the consent of a parent. However, depending on the situation, a court can overrule this.

To find out more, visit the Adviceguide website and view the health information for young people, where you will find a range of helpful advice.

Hope this helps

Take care

Sam
