There’s this man..

Hi Sam, I’m quite scared, because I got on this website were you can make your own account and talk to people, even without asking for a friend request. I’m kinda scared because there this guy on that website, (I think he’s about 17, but the website is made for 11 year olds....) and that guy keeps following my avatar, and asking if I have a cam, or msn cam. I know he wants me to strip or something like that, and I’m scared. He keeps and keeps and keeps asking these same creepy questions, once he even asked my breast size! I have reported him, but he keeps following me, and I’m very scared. I didn’t give him any info about where I live or anything, but he is just scaring me. I do not want to tell my mum coz I’m really shy :(

PLz help me sam xx

Hi,

Thank you for you message. I am really pleased that you have wrote in and explained about what is happening. It sounds like what has happened is really scary and what this person is doing is wrong. You have definitely done the right thing by reporting it.

I think that it is great that you are thinking about your safety whilst being on the internet. Although you have reported him, maybe it would helpful to think about ways of keeping yourself safe when being on the internet in the future. It is good that you have not given him any information about yourself.

You mentioned that you do not want to tell your mum as you are really shy. Telling someone can be scary and a big step to take however you have done really well telling me. It might be easier to tell someone that you can trust like your mum, a family relative or a teacher by writing them a letter. That way you don’t have to be there in person, you can get everything that has happened down and it also gives them time to read it. You have done nothing wrong and you deserve support.

It might be helpful if something like this happens again to print off or make a copy of what the person sends to you, this way you can show a person you trust.

I wonder how you feel about having a chat with a ChildLine counsellor? You could have a 1-2-1 chat or call the free helpline on 0800 1111. A counsellor will help you to talk about how you feel about what’s happened, and explore what you think your options and choices are.

I hope that the website that you have reported it to has been in contact with you and have done something about what this guy is doing. If not, you can report it to The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) who protect children and young people. CEOP works with the police and your report will go to straight to them, they will look into what you tell them. They also have a website for with lots of other information about how to stay safe online and what to do next if something like this happens. It might be helpful to have a look at it.

You have been really brave to write to me, it is important that you know that you are doing the right thing by reporting it and there is support there for you if you would like to talk about it more.

Take care,

Sam
